No shirt, no shoes, no problem was the theme behind Pole Vault City traveling to St. John in the US Virgin Islands for a pole vault camp held at the Gifft Hill School. Thanks to Jeff and Kim Mayfield, Pole Vault City was able to perform a two day clinic for 5 athletes in St. John. Staton and Rains Mayfield, along with their friends Jeannie, Xavier, and Weston rounded out the group of vaulters for the camp. The island was beautiful and the pole vault setting was breathtaking. Gifft Hill School is located on top of one of the local mountain ranges and had a magnificent view of the surrounding mountain ranges. The field was a synthetic turf field, much like that at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. This was the first time we have ever held a camp on a non track surface, which was truly an experience. The highlight of the experience was getting to meet Brion Morrisette, the only pole vaulter from the Virgin Islands to ever compete in an Olympic Games. Brion cleared 5.20 in the 1984 Olympics held in LA. It was an honor be able to work alongside such a notable figure in the history of the vault. Brion provided us with a trip to his place in Lavongo, a small island near St. John. It was truly one of the most breathtaking views of anywhere in the world. Thank you Brion for your hospitality and the use of the facility. Pole Vault City will try to post updates as we get them from the newest Caribbean vault group. Thanks again to all who participated and supported the camp. We hope to be able to return one day.
